How I Love My Cookbooks

Bruce and I went to Barnes and Noble Bookstore the other evening because he had some consultant related materials he needed to get. I decided to tag along, it was sort of like a date night. And, I wasn't really planning on buying anything. I've been trying to borrow books from the library or read online instead of bringing more things into the house.

Well, I went right to the reduced cookbook section, of course, and started looking. I love looking through cookbooks, and would often spend hours in the evenings after the kids had gone to bed, snuggled under the covers and contentedly browsing through recipes. And I think that when my frame of mind was good and happy, that was when I enjoyed it the most.

I already have several books from the Fix It and Forget It series, but not the Vegetarian and when I saw it there, I struggled with wanting to buy it. Which was a little silly as it was only $7. Bruce said get it, so I got it, and it made me happy as a clam.

The first recipe I put together was Split Pea and Rice Soup and now that I take a closer look at the picture above, I can see where I went wrong with this recipe! I had cut the recipe in half, and then let it simmer for quite a few hours before lifting the lid to take a peek. But when I lifted the lid, it did not resemble soup in the least. Too much rice. In the end, some extra water and seasoning saved the day.

More meatless meals are on the way, maybe the Split Pea and Potato Soup next. And, I'll have to settle myself down before I get started next time just so I don't make the same mistakes.  :-)

  3. YOu and I are much the same Sandy...I still read cookbooks like novels and somehow, they keep finding their way into my home even though my personal collection could put a large library to shame. ;)

  4. I love old cookbooks. I like the new ones also, but old cookbooks and cooking magazines feel so cozy to me...
The cover of your book is very colorful and pretty!

  5. I love old cookbooks, too. And the cover of this book was what attracted me! I do try to look at newer cookbooks with the latest trendy ingredients, but I have to say that I don't really look that long before looking for old fashioned comfort recipes!
