Road Trip To Oklee

When we heard that Carl Unbehaun was going to be singing at a bar in the little town of Oklee, Minnesota, we looked at each other and said, let's go! Carl hosts the radio show Minnesota Homebrew, and has been so great about playing Bruce's music. He's also interviewed Bruce twice now at the Great Minnesota Get Together, and has become a good friend. We couldn't wait to see the look on his face when we got there.

Oklee is about 230 miles from here, so a bit of a drive. We stopped briefly at the cabin on our way there to put the cold grocery items in the fridge, and then turned on Google Maps. We ended up on some off the beat roads that made us wonder, but we eventually made it there. It stormed at times and my phone car charger died, which was annoying. We drove by cows and hay bales, and passed by a large field of not very tall sunflowers which made me think of Debbie saying that this year had been hard on sunflowers because of the drought.

When we walked up to TJ's Tavern, Carl was outside talking on his phone. He saw us, and of course he looked shocked. He asked what we doing there, and I told him that our road trip adventure to hear him sing in Oklee was just the beginning of my Birthday Week celebrations!

It was fun to hear him sing. We ate some supper, and had a chance to meet his wife, Jane, too. Then back on the road, but first we had to gas up the car. We ended up buying another phone charger for the car at the gas station, $30, yikes. But it's hard to imagine being without my phone these days.

We took a different road back through Brainerd because the thought of getting lost on back roads in the dark was unnerving. It was close to 11pm when we arrived at the cabin, and then Bruce suggested that we go outside and watch for meteor showers (I call them shooting stars). We took our flashlights and carefully made our way to the dock. It was another adventure to be laying on a dark dock at midnight, looking for shooting stars. We ended up seeing a few, too.

Looking good, Hosta!

The next morning we had raspberry danish and eggs for breakfast, hung up my new wind chime, and did a few chores in the yard. I noticed that the Hosta were looking better than usual. I'm pretty sure it's because I've been sprinkling milorganite around them, and the deer have been leaving them alone. Bruce worked hard on removing more lake weeds from around the dock.

I wonder what our next adventure will be.

Baby Daniel

I think Baby Daniel looks like a Kewpie Doll 💕

Baby Daniel (also known as Danzer 💕) is doing more big boy stuff these days such as turning from his back to his tummy (plus the other way around according to Katie) and reaching out for toys. He loves watching his big brother play, and loves his Bink, but will also chew on his fingers if that's what's available. We laugh whenever Aaron makes a funny growling noise that he says is Daniel's voice, but it's even funnier now that Danzer has started making that exact same noise! 😂
