March Winter Storm

Today the sun is shining. We had a winter storm blow through last weekend, and ended up with close to eleven inches of snow! Of course our power went out a couple of times, it seems to be happening more often these last several years. Trees are larger and fall over power lines, plus winds can be strong. I'm getting better about trying not to panic when that happens, and have found it helps for me to read with a flashlight until power is restored. Oh, I'm so grateful when lights and heat go back on.

February Book Club Beauties

After a very busy few months, the Book Club Beauties were finally able to get together! We met here on Sunday Feb. 8th for our long awaited time together and of course, had our usual catch up and conversation about life.

We decided that our recent reading of Paper Girls was a dud! I don't think any of us enjoyed this graphic novel at all. It wasn't just the different presentation format, but the story seemed all over the place and hard to follow. There was also a negative characterization of older adults. And being somewhat older adults now (well maybe not Kat, she's still a baby) that is just unacceptable. 😂

The food was a highlight as it always is.

I found an ancient novel in the basement, Mr and Mrs Bo Jo Jones by Ann Head, and wondered if the others were interested in reading it for our next selection. We discovered that it was so old that it was no longer in publication, but did find the made for TV movie on YouTube to watch, so that was an option for those not interested in chasing down a used copy to buy.

We'll meet here again in March as Mona's condo is now under renovation!

Muskrat Muskrat

Well, it all started with a call from Curt, who said he'd discovered that a tree had fallen along the back side of our garage at the lake. He'd stopped by to check on some maple tree tappings, and there it was.

We were on our way back from a day of mattress shopping with Nick when we got the call, and decided to leave for the cabin as soon as we got home. It was a beautiful drive up north, but since it was getting dark when we arrived, we thought we'd wait until morning to take a look at the tree. We ate homemade burritos and popcorn, and watched several episodes of the Big Bang Theory before going to bed.

fresh air and hard work,
good for you

Turns out that a big tree fell on a smaller tree, and then they both fell towards the garage. The paddleboat leaning against the garage saved the day, though, as the branches landed mostly on it, leaving no damage to the siding! Bruce manned the chainsaw, and I helped drag branches back into the woods. It took a few hours to cut up and clear out a good portion of it. The rest can be done later.

Will Curt share some of his
maple syrup with us?

Curt stopped by again, and happened to look down into our window well. A sleeping muskrat was in there! I messaged with Mark about it, and he suggested we put one of the fallen branches into the well as a ramp of sorts, and maybe the muskrat would be able to climb up and out to freedom. I really hope he's gone by the time we get back...
